North Purcell Blvd. closure to begin Sept. 14
PUEBLO – The 1.8-mile section of North Purcell Boulevard between Fairbanks Drive and Interstate 25, in Pueblo West, Colorado, will be closed for up to 38 days beginning on Thursday, September 14 for an asphalt replacement project. The recommended alternate route to access I-25 is Platteville Boulevard.
Two variable message boards have been posted in the immediate area of the road closure on Friday, September 8.
Pueblo County’s Engineering and Public Works Department realizes this closure will be inconvenient for some drivers and hopes drivers can remain patient as workers complete the project to make the future drive smoother.
The project has an estimated completion date of October 21, 2017 barring weather-related delays.
The traffic delays that would have been created with one-way traffic led by a pilot car during the daytime were anticipated to be equal to or greater than the time it would take to use the recommended alternate route. One-way daytime traffic operations would also have had a significantly higher cost and would have taken approximately 60 to 75 calendar days to complete the project.
Engineering and Public Works also evaluated night traffic operations with the road open. However, due to the lack of street lights in this section of N. Purcell Blvd., safety issues would arise due to poor visibility, rough roads, gravel surfaces and shoulder drop-offs.
The project is being paid for by monies paid to Pueblo County by Colorado Springs Utilities for reconstruction of haul route roads as a condition of the 1041 permit for the Southern Delivery System (SDS), approved by the Pueblo Board of County Commissioners.
